Summary/Abstract: On October 28, 1940, Italy launched an unexpected attack on Greece, causing a spectacular collapse of Mussolini’s “parallel war” in the ongoing armed conflict. The failure brought Italy’s weakness to the surface, revealing that fascist Italy, which dreamt to be a great power and to turn the Mediterranean into Mare Nostrum, had no military and economic potential to exercise real dominance over the Mediterranean. In this study, in addition to presenting the events of the Greco–Italian War, I would like to shed light on how the contemporary Hungarian political and military leadership saw the conflict and how it explained Italy’s failure. Using the reports of the Hungarian royal embassies, I would like to present the Hungarian expectations, hopes and realization about the poor performance of the Italian ally.
