Summary/Abstract: The Royal Castle in Warsaw is in possession of an exquisite duel rapier, with a gilt pappenheimerhilt decorated with a heraldic motif of a crowned eagle. Its blade was made in the workshops from Solingen or Passau. The two-pierced shell guard with discs (developed at the end of the 16th c.) is characteristic of the Pappenheimer-hilt rapier from the 1st half of the 17th c. The rapier dates back to the last decade of the reign of Sigismund III Vasa or to the reign of Władysław IV. That the rapier was used for duels is borne out by the 126-centimetre long, delicate blade, which is too slender to be used in battle. The heraldic motif on both discs of the hilt guarding the hand makes the rapier a rare copy of a dueling weapon.
