Summary/Abstract: The article reviews all names given to the elephant in Lithuanian dictionaries from the 17 th to the 19 th century (elpantas, slanas). The colloquial dramblys (cf. the verbs dribti, drimba, dribo) means 'huge and clumsy'. In the 20 th century it gained the meaning of a zoological term.
