Summary/Abstract: If we listen carefully, we can draw from our heritage, from all that our ancestors, women, men, girls, and boys, have left us. From their stories and their destinies. The documents uncovered, church records, archival materials, court records and family correspondence, offer a glimpse into the life of a community based on a supportive customary system, but also a record of the lives of individuals who were excluded from and stigmatised by their communities. Birth, marriage, and death are important landmarks in the life of a family. The presence or absence of a supportive, helping community is crucial in all cases. Having worked with a variety of source materials, the language of these, the pitiless tone of court records, the impartiality of church minutes, the intimacy of personal correspondence, all convey a message. Bakó Ferenczné Török Zsuzsanna, the wife and later widow of the former Reformed Christian pastor of Gömörhorka (Gemerská Hôrka), was my great-grandmother on my mother's side. This headstrong and indomitable woman was the main inspiration for writing this work.
