Summary/Abstract: Focusing on the case study of Improbable Theatre’s directing tandem Phelim McDermott and Lee Simpson (and their 2017 production of Lost without Words at the National Theatre London), Radosavljević 's essay traces a lineage of the contemporary director, rooted in the paradigm of live improvisation and facilitative directing associated with the practice of Keith Johnstone. Drawing on the notion of heterarchy as a principle of self-organisation, she suggests that the twenty-first century director can be characterised not only by an altered approach to authorship, but also to leadership and interpersonal relationships.
