Summary/Abstract: The Popes have always supported the missionary activity of the Church, sent missionaries, approved the formation of local Churches, prepared directives, instructions, pastoral letters and other documents. The first strictly missionary encyclical was Probe nostis of Gregory XVI on missions among non-Christian nations from 1840. A great breakthrough in the missionary consciousness of the Church turned out to be the Second Vatican Council, andafter that particularly significant was the apostolic exhortation of Paul VI Evangelii nuntiandi about evangelization in the modern world from 1975. The summit of papal teaching on thissubject became the encyclical of John Paul II Redemptoris missio on the constant relevance of the missionary message from 1990. The successors of this Pope are definitely continuingin their teaching concern for the missionary activity of the Church.
