Summary/Abstract: The main objective of the survey was to determine the current status of school-basedsubstance abuse prevention in special elementary schools in relation to the most commonly usedprevention strategies and the extent to which teachers are prepared to prevent substance abuseproblems in students with mild intellectual disabilities. The survey instrument was an electronicquestionnaire of our own design, addressed to the teachers, which was sent electronically to thedirectorates of all special elementary schools for pupils with intellectual disabilities in Slovakia. Thesurvey was administered to 203 teachers forming the available sample of respondents. The surveyshows that in the framework of practical solutions to school drug prevention it is necessary tostrengthen prevention activities in relation to the specificities of the target group of pupils and toimplement innovative prevention practices in education. Teachers do not feel qualified for the positionof preventionist, they lack appropriate methodological material and assess the overall success ofschool prevention as minimal, mainly due to the lack of cooperation with pupils‘ families, but also dueto the low level of cooperation with competent institutions.
