Summary/Abstract: In a study that involves the interpretation of such complex characters as those in the sphere of Russian literature writings, like those of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov and Leo Tolstoy, I inevitably reached issues like love, faith, aspirations, suffering and failure. I tried to understand the human dimension of the feminine characters from Chekhov’s plays, Three sisters, Uncle Vanya, The Cherry Orchard and The Seagull and from Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina. These feminine characters are stranded between the memory of their hopes and dreams and the hurting feeling of their unfulfillment, which is present in all the aspects of their lives. The nature of these characters and the extreme feelings and emotions emanating from their souls can only be born from an equally tumultuous life, bestrewed with falls and rises. Most of the characters acknowledge their defeat, they often anticipate it, but they do not have the power to change anything, although they speak of change, of a new life. We notice a big discrepancy between words and deeds. The characters dream, talk about their dream, but do not materialize anything, talk about passion, but do not live it, talk about a new life, but resign themselves to it. All projects, ideals, dreams, and projections in the future are destined to fail. I went through the failures of female characters, classifying them into types of failures: erotic failure, failure in the profession, and other unfulfillments, and then I inserted an analyse of a play staged in the Romanian theatre.
