Research activity of Professor Stanisław Rospond in Silesia in 1945–1950

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is the presentation of the general characteristics of the research and organizational activity of Professor Stanisław Rospond in Silesia in the first years after World War II. Stanisław Rospond was born in the village of Liszki, near Kraków. He read Polish and Slavonic Studies at the Jagiellonian University. Fascinated by the history of Silesia, he moved to Wrocław in 1945. Here, together with a group of professors from Lviv, he set about the rebuilding of Polish academe organizing the teaching of Polish linguistics with a focus on Silesian studies. This distinguished personality consumed with a passion for academic work was described by the epithet spiritus movens of academic life in Silesia. The content of the paper consists of brief biographical details for Stanisław Rospond, the course of his professional work, an assessment of his linguistic publications from a contemporary perspective and supplemented with several monographs, countless treatises, articles, publicity texts and his organizational and social achievements in the area of geographical nomenclature, the history of the Polish language and historical dialectology. All his publications demonstrated the eternal Polishness of Silesia in the light of geographical names, linguistic monuments and the Silesian dialect. In addition, the professor often appeared in the press in Lower Silesia, where he justified the practical significance of the reformulation of geographical naming in the so-called Regained Territories. He published in the following journals: “Pionier” [Pioneer], “Śląsk” [Silesia],“Odra” [Odra River], “Odrodzenie” [Rebirth], “Słowo Polskie” [Polish Word], and “Świat i Życie” [World and Life].
