Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present a theory of naive linguistics, which is a novelty in Polishlinguistics. We make a critical review of the relevant literature by confronting the NL with theoriesof language awareness, aƫ tudes towards language, and the theory of social representations. Our examples indicate that the expert thinking of language has not been popularised (thelanguage policy problem) and the issues of naive thinking have not been described in detail (themethodological problem) to this date. This gap could be fi lled by this research, which aims, onthe one hand, to thoroughly describe how naive linguistics comes into existence and functionsand, on the one hand, to present such a picture of the actual social situation as would permitmore eff ective political and linguistic activities. The value of the conducted research, apart fromthe strictly scienƟfi c, theoretical, dimension, is also utilitarian.
