Identity of place using the example of Warmia - a case study

Summary/Abstract: The essential element of Warmianness – understood as the sense of distinctness felt by the Warmians living there – is the identity of place. This distinctness is based on the specific history of the region and the characteristic geographical and natural space present in so-called Polish Warmia. On the basis of sociological field research conducted by Stanisław Ossowski in 1948 and later research from 1983, 2005–2006 and 2016 conducted by the author of this article in the Warmian villages of Leszno and Purda Wielka, the relationships between Warmians and their place of residence are demonstrated. An important element in the Warmian identity is the Polish system of minority education of the interwar period.
