Summary/Abstract: The author of the grammar book, Henryk Suchecki (1811–1872), was a teacher of Polish anda professor at Charles University in Prague and Jagiellonian University. The textbook entitledNauka języka polskiego dla uczącej się młodzi (Polish for young learners), published in 1849,was dedicated to primary school pupils. The chapters of the book, according to the author,correspond to divisions of grammar: o pisowni (On spelling) (= orthography), Rzecz o głoskach(On sounds) (= phonetics), Rzecz o głoskach (On syllables) (= phonetics, word-formation), Rzeczo słowach (On words) (= inflection and word-formation), and Rzecz o zdaniach (On sentences)(= syntax). Suchecki is one of few authors of grammar books to invoke the views of Germanauthors. The evaluation of the work by researchers of those and later times is ambivalent.
