Summary/Abstract: Rosa Luxemburg (1871–1919) was a Polish socialist and German social democrat. At the turn of 19th and 20th centuries, SPD (Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands – Social Democratic Party of Germany) was one of the key political powers of the German Empire and on behalf of this party Luxemburg undertook numerous propaganda trips – the route of some of them included Wrocław. She visited this city for the first time in 1898 and came back after nearly 20 years under completely different circumstances. Wrocław was a large cluster of proletariat and, consequently, at the turn of the centuries became an important center of social democratic and union movement. Rosa Luxemburg came to Wrocław readily. She was on good terms with local activists, especially the editors of the social democratic press organ – “Volkswacht”. Not only was she its subscriber, but also published articles and was mentioned on its pages when she spoke in public in the city. She spent in custody virtually the whole period of the World War I; from July 1917 to November 1918 she was held in preventive detention in prison on present day Kleczkowska Street in Wrocław. When she was released in November 1918, she had few in common with former comrades – she continued to support the notion of proletariat revolution while they negotiated with the new authorities to avoid escalation of revolutionary sentiments.
