Summary/Abstract: The Bulgarian adaption of the Beck Depression Inventory is analyzed from the perspective of Item Response Theory. The motivation of the work is twofold – on one hand to refine the psychometrical portfolio of the scale, and to present explicitly most of the applied statistical models and algorithms, on the other hand. In the IRT calibration of the BDI have been used various model specifications tested in different criterion-based samples. Particular emphasis is put on the identification of differential item functioning (DIF) – presented are various approaches to this topic. The analysis of DIF reveals the gender and age effects on the item behavior in thus defined groups. This way one may undertake the test score equalization as an essential part in scale interpretation.
