Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to describe and analyze the kolęda z drzewkiem (“carolling with a tree”) rite performed in Zarównie (Rzeszów region). The author recalled its genesis, determined the range of its occurrence as well as its functions, described the performance context, and excerpted and analyzed, in accordance with the methodology of the Moscow ethnolinguistic school, the individual codes of the rite, with particular emphasis on the share, verbal and musical codes. Observation of the subject code of the “carolling with a tree” made it possible to define and describe its basic symbolic meanings. As a source base served recordings registered in 1974, deposited in the Archive of Music Religious Folklore at Institute of Musicology of the Catholic University of Lublin (AMFR KUL), as well as field materials from the Archives of the Museum of Folk Culture in Kolbuszowa (MKL–AE).
