Summary/Abstract: Brandt explores the ways in which Stanisława Przybyszewska was inspired by Germanliterature. Georg Büchner’s Danton’s Death, Goethe’s Egmont and Schiller’s Wallenstein allhad a significant impact on her work, especially on the choice of subject, the constructionof her plays and the portrayal of her characters. Brandt also examines referencesto Thomas Mann and his notion of Apollonian and Dionysiac elements in Przybyszewska’sunfinished story “Spuk / Die Besessene” (Haunting / The Possessed), which she wrote inGerman. Finally, Brandt also discusses Przybyszewska’s references to the tradition of theBildungsroman in her stories about the emancipation of women.
