Summary/Abstract: Kusek proposes a new perspective for studying the horizontal cultural exchangebetween South African literature and Central Europe, whereby the latter is not only asource of inspiration for South African writers but represents South African literature’spotential history. He argues for a distinctive South African mode of writing and readinghistory, identity and geography – one that is based on the mutual overlap betweenCentral European and South African maps, space-time and identities. This method isespecially pronounced in the work of Deborah Levy, a doubly provincial (i.e. both SouthAfrican and Central European) writer. Kusek explores the trajectory of her dialogue withCentral Europe and the way she questions the imperial geography of both regions andthe conceptual apparatus produced within it, including literary canons, poetics andgenealogies.
