Summary/Abstract: The literary character of psychiatric publications is most apparent in case studies,especially when the patient’s story touches on controversial issues. Herczyńskaexamines Jan Nelken’s 1931 monograph Kokainizm i homoseksualizm [Cocaine Addictionand Homosexuality] in its historical context. She demonstrates that Nelken – one ofthe most interesting psychiatrists and psychoanalysts of the interwar years – distancedhimself from his patients by applying tropes borrowed from detective fiction.
