Summary/Abstract: Do universal dimensions of music experience exist and, if they do, how can they be described? Answers to these questions are suggested from the very first experimental studies of music’s expressiveness. They set a tradition of exploring the direct relationships between musical components and emotional experience, which is still vital today. The need for more sophisticated theoretical explanation of the empirical findings is met by the neuropsychological, the psychoacoustical, the functionalist and the cognitive approaches. However, all these models eventually face a common problem: the need of acknowledging the role of the extramusical factors such as individual differences, social context, and cultural backgrounds. At this point studies come close to the positions of sociologically and anthropologically oriented investigators, which, in their extreme version, deny the existence of universal dimensions or music experience. Nevertheless, this criticism can be overcome and the cross-cultural and developmental perspectives are regarded as possibilities of taking a new look at the universal and relative characteristics of the expression in music.
