Summary/Abstract: The article concerns picturebooks’ composition and perception. The text discusses variousapproaches to the genre, indicates contradictions in definitions of the form, examinesdifferences between a picturebook and an illustrated book, and finally, introducesa prototype of the genre. The notion of word-graphy is used to describe works closest tothe established model. Śniecikowska focuses on the new phenomenon in Poland, namelylogovisual intimist picturebooks created not only with children in mind and dealingwith important, complex, and emotionally evocative issues. Often such works realizethe word-graphic postulates of balance and interdependence of materials. Theoreticalconsiderations are complemented by the analysis of one of Iwona Chmielewska’spublications, a word-graphy escaping the categorization of book illustrations, whichintegrates media through mutual (re) interpretation of text and image.
