Summary/Abstract: The article seeks to map the word–image relationship. Mitchell defines the differencebetween word and image by pointing to various possible criteria of its determination. Heindicates the difficulty of unambiguously distinguishing these concepts and highlightstheir interdependence. Moreover, Mitchell points to the conceptualization of “word andimage” in the field of art history and linguistics, citing such examples as the duck-rabbitor de Saussure’s diagram that depicts the structure of a linguistic sign. Finally, Mitchellshows the deeply political entanglement of the “word–image” relationship and its linksto the determination of racial, class, and gender differences.
