Summary/Abstract: The first part of the article analyzes the possible anthropological and philosophicalmeanings of the figure of the pineal gland and the third eye. Referring to Descartes,Bataille, Lacan, and Janine Chasseguet-Smirgel, Lipszyc presents the idea of the thirdeye as a record of the dream of overcoming symbolic castration and achieving subjectivesovereignty. The second part seeks a way out of the dilemma of the sovereign positionand the position of subjection to the law. Lipszyc focuses on Laurence Sterne’s work byanalyzing in detail one of the fragments of the novel about Tristram Shandy, in whichthe figure of the pineal gland also plays an important role. The analyses reveal a vision ofliterature as a perverse, ambiguous, and seducible creation, which goes beyond the setof positions outlined by philosophers and psychoanalysis theoreticians.
