Summary/Abstract: The article surveys the formation of brain art, understood as art&science projects basedon techniques for parameterizing living organisms. In this respect, the article extendsthe 2019 concept of brain art proposed by Anton Nijholt, which foregrounds twomain areas of brain art development: projects that rely on medical brain imaging andpresentations that employ biosensoric techniques (primarily electroencephalography). In this context, the article analyzes two main creative strategies employed in brain artprojects: the discussion with the conviction of neurorealism provided by the machinecharacter of medical procedures and the creation of mechanisms of posthumaninterconnectedness, which assume forms of “sleep machines,” neurofeedback systems, and other performative-participatory variants. The text considers brain art as a particulartype of artistically oriented medical narratives.
