Zbigniew Herbert’s Notes from the House of the Dead

Summary/Abstract: Using the method of genetic criticism, the article considers certain themes presentin draft versions of the poem “Pan Cogito – zapiski z martwego domu” (Pan Cogito:Notes from the House of the Dead), which in the initial stages of writing was a story“Wspomnienia Pana Cogito z azylu” (Mr. Cogito’s Memories from the Asylum). The tablesshow words related to the asylum’s reality, which Herbert deleted or crossed out. Fornariinterprets the image of reality in the “hospital temple’s,” where the characters remain,against the background of Goffman and Foucault’s research. The dedication in one of thetext’s versions allows seeking common motifs of Mr. Cogito’s “memoirs” and Krzysztoń’sbook Obłęd (Madness).
