Summary/Abstract: The article attempts to refresh the reading of Juliusz Kaden-Bandrowski’s novel MateuszBigda. Śmieja shows the roots of the novel’s idea in categories derived from Hegel’sphilosophy of history, with a particular emphasis on the master-slave dialectic, whichin the novel determines not only the meaning of social transformations but also thepsychological dimension of the relationship between protagonists (Mateusz Bigdaand Władysław Deptuła). This relationship develops in the novel’s sequel – the partiallypreserved Jedwabny węzeł (Silk Knot) – in which happens another shift of the dialectictoward erotic relations: between Mateusz Bigda and Ms. Kostryniowa.
