This Is Not a Doll

Summary/Abstract: This review of Piotr Paziński’s book Atrapy stworzenia (Creation Dummies) follows thequestions posed Paziński himself, including the key one: about the status of a doll (andrelated anthropomorphic creations). To deal with this issue, Paziński introduces thenotion of a dummy or “dummy-ness.” He has already employed the concept in his previousbook of essays to which the review also refers: Rzeczywistość poprzecierana (Worn-OutReality). From Paziński’s perspective, dummies allow us to name the phenomenon theythemselves carry: that which imitates existence seems to exist more acutely than thatwhich fully exists. At the same time, the dummies are a material metaphor for the fragilityof what we call consciousness.
