Summary/Abstract: The essay scrutinizes “anti-imperialist nostalgia” theoretically by tracing the lastingsignificance and liberating potential of the unrealized desires for anti-colonial liberationthat accompanied the mid-twentieth century decolonization struggles. The articleemploys “nostalgia” not to define backward yearnings for an idealized past that neverhappened but to project forward utopian longings for a future – a future of the past – thathas never happened yet can still inspire present actions.
