Summary/Abstract: The article introduces the category of myth according to Pier Paolo Pasolini, which isthen used to analyze postwar consumer society on the example of two mythical figures:Oedipus and Medea. The research framework consists of the theory of myth and thethought of Antonio Gramsci and Walter Benjamin, from whom Pasolini learned to observeclassism and consumerism. The first part of the article indicates the clear analogybetween Gramsci’s theory of hegemony, Benjamin’s view of capitalism as religion, andPasolini’s film and literary works. The second part of the text briefly analyzes Passolini’sfilms Oedipus Rex and Medea as a historical image of society and a longing for the past.
