Summary/Abstract: The 2019 awarding of the Nobel Prize to Peter Handke has brought attention to theAustrian author, who so far has received surprisingly little attention in Poland. Beginningwith Handke’s Nobel speech – especially based on the novel Die Wiederholung(Repetition, 1986) and subsequent related works – Lami traces Handke’s referencesto the historiosophy of Walter Benjamin, the philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard, and to theJewish Kabbalah. The creation of a specific variety of messianic thought – which appearsin the work in connection with Slovenes, Slovenian language, and Slovenian history – isclosely connected with the notion of otherness and with the Other, along with thepoetics of translation created by Handke. While Handke pursues through storytelling themessianic function of “peacemaking,” Lami suggests the term “narrative messianism.” Theforegrounded theme of “repetition” allows for delving into Handke’s later works and intoits offshoots, like Wim Wenders’s film Der Himmel über Berlin (Wings of Desire).
