Summary/Abstract: In May 2022, as a resultof Russia’s renewed war ofaggression against Ukraine,Sweden broke its long-stand-ing official position of mili-tary non-alignment and ap-plied to join NATO. The suc-cess of this application willdepend very much on thegoodwill of Turkey. While this wholesituation will seem very odd to the casualoutside observer, there is an interestinghistorical backstory that connects Swe-den, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine.
