Summary/Abstract: The war in Ukraine forBulgarian society is what Do-nald Trump was for the Unit-ed States and Brexit for theUnited Kingdom – a quakethat divided society. Bulgar-ia became a member of theEuropean Union in 2007, butnever managed to part withtwo definitions of itself. One is that it isthe poorest and most corrupt country inthe EU, and the other is that it was themost loyal satellite of the Soviet Union. These labels continue to influence Sofia’spolicy and largely explain the politicalchanges in the country since the begin-ning of the Russian invasion.
