Summary/Abstract: Lay formation is an important part of the Church’s mission in every country. In European societies it is easier to provide lay faithful with a religious education adjusted to their needs. However, in China, which is not a country of complete religious freedom and there are many external constraints on the development of the Church, it is quite difficult to provide systematic formation of the faith of Chinese lay faithful. For this reason the Diocese of Handan has adopted a number of practical approaches to lay faith formation in the light of the current situation of the local Church. These include organized catechism and biblical knowledge competitions, a youth formation program for students, matrimonial meetings, teacher training for Sunday schools and the Light-Life movement etc., and it takes place through several formation institutions: such as the Preparatory Seminary, Diocesan Formation Centre and Students Formation Centre. These unsystematic methods of formation have proved crucial to the development of the Church in China.
