Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the poetics of Turgenev’s novel Nakanune in the light of the melancholic cultural tradition. The forms of synthesis between social-topical and poetic-philosophical plans have been analyzed based on the following works: Vinitsky’s cultural works, Prozorov’s literary works and Starobinsky’s philosophy works. It has been found out that the main character Dmitry Insarov is the character who determines the integrality of the novel Nakanune. In previous research he was interpreted as character-doer and revolutionary, so he belongs to the social novel plan only. The poetics of melancholy and horror originating from the Russian romantic poet Zhukovsky’s ballads appears actively in the Russian novel of second half of the XIX century. The representation of love story between Insarov and Elena follows its poetical prototype – Zhukovsky’s ballad Ludmila. On the one hand, ballad’s features make Turgenev’s novel more metaphysical; on the other hand, they reveal Insarov as “another” character who is not only ideal-holistic character but is also a the highly tragic person.
