Summary/Abstract: This article is a study of two unknown and yet crucial aspects of Luis Collado’s Platica manval, the most important artillery treatise of the 16th century. The first aspect refers to major quantitative and qualitative differences between the Italian edition of 1586 and the Spanish one of 1592 and the reasons behind them. The second aspect regards the consequences of the publication of the work on Collado’s professional career. The study contains an in-depth analysis of both treatise versions as well as of unpublished archival sources enabling to put in context the professional ambitions that Collado sought to fulfil by becoming a treatise writer. The article also demonstrates differences between the two aforementioned editions that stem from the publication of a treatise by Diego de Álava y Viamont in 1590.
