Writing in the 1st year of primary school

Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with teaching writing in the 1st grade of primary school. The practice of writing is dominated by the prevalence of traditional approaches favouring form over content. During their first year of schooling, pupils acquire all the shapes of the written alphabet letters and their connections as well as the shapes of typed letters. Pupils are required to follow the basic qualitative features of the letters and to acquire the hygiene of writing. They write dictations and are encouraged to produce their own writing, which can be fully developed in the later years of primary and secondary education.
