Summary/Abstract: The article is focused on the social transformations that arise from the mutual influences in the economy-crisis-media triangle. The aim is to attempt to outline significant processes and recurring trends that are part of the relationships in this three-factor block. Emphasis is placed on public perceptions and boundaries that are defined by the direction of economic policy in different historical periods. The role of classic media at the end of the 20th century, and of social networks in the 21st century, is of central importance. Their effects are transferred directly and indirectly to public attitudes and fears, and the lack of media literacy turns out to be a decisive factor in the direction of public polarization, misinformation and the rapid formation of virtual communities.
