Summary/Abstract: The analysis of the interactions between teachers and learners which is punctuated by verbal and non-verbal messages and instructions in physical education and sports in particular highlights the importance of resorting to multimodal communication in achieving pedagogical effectiveness. This article examines the degree of effectiveness of different combinations of several modes of communication (voice, writing, a wide array of gestures, whistling, the fixed gaze, etc.) in the classes held by three teachers in the context of Dakar academy inspection of the multiple team competitions process. By means of direct observation, the inspectors’ assessment appreciated the primacy of non-verbal communication in the handling (the start-up and the body) of the sessions, the language of the whistle and other non-verbal signifiers prevailing. The success of these parts of the lesson was the result of good organization and well-established communication automatisms.
