Summary/Abstract: One of the most important characteristics of the modern world is polycentricity, analyzed in various aspects and in relation to different spatial scales. The literature indicates numerous advantages of such a spatial structure in the scale of the European Union, individual countries, regions, urban agglomera-tions or creation of polycentric urban networks. However, there are not many publications on the polycentric spatial structure of the city, which, as it seems, can bring many different benefits to the citizens and the city as a whole, while making it possible to achieve the objectives of sustainable development at the same time. This paper presents the concept of urban substructures, which is a part of the polycentricity of cities, that is certain functional wholes consisting of a subcentre and the area of its influence. The main purpose of the article is to analyze and evaluate whether the Poznań district of Jeżyce can be treated as a substructure of Poznań, whose focal point (and also a subcentre of the city) is located in the centre of the district, i.e. the Jeżycki Market. On the basis of document analysis and field research the following were determined, among others: (1) the functions which the Jeżycki Market performs for the residents of Jeżyce and the city as a whole, (2) the places where the residents of the estate satisfy their daily needs, and (3) their relationship to the area they live in (territorial identity). The author concludes that Jeżyce can be defined as an urban substructure. She also indicates the benefits which come from creating a polycentric spatial form of the city consisting of substructures.
