Summary/Abstract: Verbs expressing posture form a special group in many languages of the world. As a result of frequent use, they often take on a new function in addition to their primary meaning: they become metaphorized or part of a grammaticalization process. The paper focuses on the Hungarian verb ül (sit) and describes its characteristics according to Newman’s typology. The corpus for the research comes mostly from the Hungarian National Text Library, and to a lesser extent from an individual non-systematic collection. The results of the analysis outline the metaphorization paths of ül and show the extent to which its grammaticalization developed. The examined Hungarian verb can thereby be compared with descriptions done from the same aspect in other languages in recent years, and it can be established whether there is a common pattern between related or areally connected languages.
