Summary/Abstract: The concept of creationism, contradictory to Darwinian Theory of Evolution, is based on literal interpretation of the Book of Genesis and its description of the creation of the universe, entire life on Earth and finally human beings. Especially the so-called Young Earth Creationism emphasizes creation of the universe in six 24-hour days, and explains extinction of several prehistoric species such as dinosaurs, during Biblical Noah’s deluge. The contemporary modified version of creationism is called intelligent design. Contrary to strict creationism, intelligent design accepts the possibility of a longer-lasting process of creation of the world by God. In their educational system, from kindergarten to universities, Evangelical Fundamentalists teach creationism or intelligent design. They try to convince their followers about existence of fossils proving that dinosaurs and humans coexisted, exclude the concept of evolution in subjects such as astronomy. They insist that the Bible is a textbook of science. They have tried to prevent teaching of the theory of evolution in public schools. In 1981 some state legislatures enacted laws giving both theories: ‘evolution science’ and ‘creationist science’ equal rights in public school programs. However, state courts dismissed the laws as unconstitutional. Contemporary debate takes place in several states and is perceived as a fundamentalist reaction to concepts of modern science.
