Summary/Abstract: Prince Demetrius Cantemir (in Turkish Beyzade Kantemiroğlu, 1673- 1723) was a renowned polymath of Moldavian origin. In addition to his other skills and accomplishments, he was a major composer of Ottoman music as well as a performer on the long-necked tanbur. The title of Cantemir’s treatise on music from ca. 1700 is “The Book of the Science of Music According to the Alphabetic Notation” (Kìtâb-i Ilmül Müsîkî ala Vech’l- Hurûfât).
