Summary/Abstract: One of the important aspects of Romanian life in the land of Făgăraș (southern Transylvania) in the middle of the 19th century was the accentuation of the tendency to aggregate and discipline rural communities. The scholar Ion Codru-Drăgușanu (1818–1884) mentions these efforts in a pamphlet published in 1864. The purpose of disciplining the rural communities was to bring the Romanian nation out of backwardness and raise it to a civilized life. According to a “Regulation of fraternity of young people from Țara Făgărașului”, they were obliged to join the guild, from the end of primary school until they were married or until they eventually moved from the village. The choice, rights and duties of the guild members were strictly regulated. The order in the guild was hierarchical, the young people having to obey the authorities of the city. Decuria represented a form of organization of families in a community (village, market or city of Făgăraș), with the aim of better social discipline. The members of the decuria pledged to support each other in case of danger (fires, natural calamities, etc.) and for the good performance of economic activities. The vassal regulation and that of the decuria came to emphasize the moral principles and norms of social and national life. The fraternity of the guild and the solidarity of the decuria significantly strengthened the Romanian identity, in a Habsburg regime over Transylvania.
