Summary/Abstract: The aim of the author’s discussion is to present an overview of the issue of play and its importance for development of preschool children. The first part of the article focused on the reference to the definition and function of play. In the next part, various theories and classifications of play were presented. In the last part, play of younger and older preschool children was characterized. The conclusions emphasized the importance of the developmental function of play, as well as described it as the basic form of activity for preschool children.
