Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the development of the main branches of the Turkish military industry during the first two decades of 21st century. In this period, Turkey made a concerted effort to reduce its dependence on foreign arms and to develop its own production of almost all military industry products, including land equipment such as assault rifles, howitzers and artillery systems, armoured vehicles, tanks; warships; in the aviation sector (assault helicopter, national combat aircraft, UAVs) and missiles (short, medium and long range); even satellites and space programme. A number of these weapons have been fielded by the Turkish military at home or in conflicts abroad. The inventory of the Turkish armed forces is about 75% saturated with indigenous systems, and progress has been made in the export of land systems, shipbuilding and drone production. However, Turkey remains dependent on imports of key components for the military industry, including engines, electronics, design and other cutting-edge technologies. Other problems facing the industry remain the country’s sometimes tense political relations with leading partners such as the US, the financial crisis and the inadequate level of the human capital.
