AN EVALUATION ON VOCABULARY OF NOVEL AND QUIET FLOWS THE DON ON THE BASIS OF RUSSIAN VOCABULARY ELEMENTS

Summary/Abstract: The vocabulary of a language is one of the significant indicators of that language’s richness and development. Because, every language has its own words and vocabulary. Particularly, linguistic studies on the vocabulary of the literary works of the language to which it belongs are valuable in terms of revealing many features such as the material and spiritual culture, life standards, traditions and customs of the society speaking that language. Considering the importance of the studies on vocabulary, in this study, the vocabulary in And Quiet Flows the Don of Mikhail Sholokhov, who was an important agent both in Russian and world literature Soviet-Russian author, was discussed. The study was carried out through the scanning technique from qualitative research methods. In this study, idioms, proverbs, dialects, slangs and archaic words were included. At the end of this study, it was asserted that the work was highly rich in terms of idioms and dialects. It is obvious that this analyzed work of Sholokhov has a linguistically rich vocabulary and its role in revealing the author’s spesific style. This article, presenting the vocabulary in And Quiet Flows the Don by Sholokhov, is aimed to give information about social and cultural values of Don Kazakhs, to discover the vocabulary of that region and to contribute to the Russian vocabulary
