Summary/Abstract: Orthodox chant exists in the service to worship and liturgical life. Traditional Serbian Church chant has existed and endured for centuries, and it was written down and harmonized by most prominent Serbian composers of 19th and 20th centuries. Second half of 20th century, which is the time of Socialist Yugoslavia, was a period of neglecting of Church chant state repression of national cultural choirs. Old choirs were restored after the fall of communism, while many new were founded also. Modern Serbian composers are creating Church music in the tradition of Mokranjac, Hristić, and Tajčević. Especially important for the education of Church singers and conductors is the Study Program for Church Music and Singing of the Academy of Music (University of East Sarajevo), which is also a realization of the intentions to create such a school that go back between two world wars.
