ASPECTS REGARDING THE RELATIONS BETWEEN CHINA AND ROMANIA (1949-1965) (PART 2)

Summary/Abstract: The inclusion of Romania in the sphere of influence of the USSR and the takeover of power in China by the Communist Party was followed by an acceleration of political cooperation between Romania and China. Cooperation intensified as both states fought for national sovereignty against the USSR, which wanted to exercise coordinating authority over the other states with state socialist regimes. After the dispute degenerated into a conflict between China and the USSR worsened, Romania tried to mediate between the two states to end this conflict. Also, at the request of the US government, Romania mediated the establishment of contacts and then diplomatic relations between China and the US. Starting with the eighth decade of the last century, the economic relations between Romania and China experienced an ever-greater development. The Romania-China relationship had the depth and continuity typical of strategic partners, in its meaning today, with the parties providing mutual support and showing solidarity in difficult moments. This bilateral and multilateral relationship, adopted by the socialist state regime in Bucharest, exceeded the limits of a political game designed to erode Soviet hegemony, by supporting the second pole of power within the world socialist state system. During several generations of leaders, the Romanian side promoted a friendly relationship with China, which was also taken over in the collective mind.
