Summary/Abstract: The paper addresses the relationship between the Byzantine emperors and Croatia and its position in the context of the Byzantine re-occupation of the Balkan Peninsula on two occasions: in the late 10th (971) and early 11th century (1018). It also discusses the Byzantine court dignities of the Croatian rulers Držislav and Krešimir and suggests the possibility that direct imperial rule existed in Croatia in the second quarter of the 11th century.
