Summary/Abstract: The coronavirus pandemic, with an unprecedented increase in the number of patients and related preventive regulations, including a ban on gathering and observance of quarantine in medical and other facilities, also necessitated Catholic Christians to reflect on the practice of administering the sacraments. In this context, the practice of administering the sacrament of reconciliation, which is not used in our country because it is unnecessary – granting absolution to several penitents at once without prior individual confession, in the form of collective absolution – comes to the fore. The article deals with the origin, the development of relevant regulation and today’s legislation of this extraordinary method of absolution, and pastoral comments on its use. As history shows, Church’s careful concern for the salvation of souls is behind all these norms, expressed by lawyers as the rule salus animarum suprema lex.
