Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to point out the historical preconditions for changes in the foundation of new institutes of consecrated life and in the approval of a new way of consecrated life. The prior written consent of the Apostolic See becomes a condition for the approval of the foundation of the institute of consecrated life. This is a condition for the validity of the foundation. Furthermore, the article shows the continuity of ecclesiological models developed in the canonical tradition. The key seems to be discernment about the ecclesiality and reliability of charisms, which becomes the basis for the valid foundation of new institutes of consecrated life by a diocesan bishop with prior written approval by the Apostolic See according to the motu proprio Authenticum charismatis of 1st November 2020. Finally, the article shows the implications of the new motu proprio. It promotes the growth of the awareness that every community of consecrated life is born and developed within a particular Church. It is a gift to the whole Church that goes beyond a single diocese.
